2 nephi chapter 2

"he showed unto men that they were lost because of the transgression of their parents" Are all men really "lost" because of the sins of Adam and Eve? There was no mortal flesh upon the earth for any form of life. Freedom is having abundant desirable alternatives. The term, "free agency" is redundant. All life forms placed upon the earth at the outset of this era (human, animals, and plants) initially existed in a paradisiacal or "spiritual" state. He is said to be in a fallen state. This phrase may simply be teaching the important concept that man cannot obtain exaltation through meticulously living the law of Moses or even the law of the gospel of Jesus Christ alone. 13 And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. The condition of man would resemble this hypothetical condition if there were no opposition in the world. Adam lived 930 years, Seth lived 912 years, Methusaleh has the record with 969 years, and Noah lived 950 years. Furthermore, it is inconsistent with the fossil record and other well-established scientific data indicating a very old earth in which natural processes (life and death) have been at work for billions of years.". Jacob. Lehi's teaching on the principle of agency. They have always existed and are characteristics of every individual intelligence. The "forbidden fruit" is "in opposition to the tree of life" since failing to overcome the world leads to failure to achieve the presence of God. The issue may not have been so much one of sin versus righteousness. He must have a dual nature-he "must needs be a compound in one." One can learn a great deal. He will then become "justified" and be resurrected to a lesser kingdom where he will experience joy, but not a fulness of joy. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given. 2 Nephi 2. 2 Nephi Chapter 4. Lifespans began to be cut much shorter. If man were only a natural or physical or temporal being ("if it should be one body"), then he would be entirely subject to natural law. 2 Nephi 2:14 Things to act and things to be acted upon. 2 Nephi 9:41. Now, I want to tell you that he does not hold any power over man, only so far as the body overcomes the spirit that is in a man, through yielding to the spirit of evil. "And the law is given unto men" The "law" here is apparently the law of the gospel of Jesus Christ-all the commandments of the Lord. 19 And after Adam and Eve had partaken of the forbidden fruit they were driven out of the garden of Eden, to till the earth. 2 Nephi 12. verse 9 "he is the firstfruits" Mosaic law required the consecration of the choicest and initial part of the harvest to God-the "firstfruits." The Lord has provided many ways for us to experience this divine joy while here on the earth. Rather it teaches a simplistic view of the life hereafter which is living either with God (exaltation) or with Satan (in outer darkness) (see the commentary for, "the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein". . These were brought to the temple and given to the priests for their support. 2 Nephi 4. ("Eternal Laws of Happiness," Ensign, Nov. 1995, 78, emphasis added), "The expression used here has reference to the day of Christ's mortal ministry, usually designated as the meridian of time. That is, by his own merits, each and every man is shut out of God's heavenly kingdom and shut out also of any degree of glory. Rather redemption is found in the combination of the two. God became God in a setting characterized by law, sin, punishment, righteousness, misery, happiness. "unto none else can the ends of the law be answered". Contrary to some notions, God actually wants us to be happy. 79-82 as taken from Latter-day Commentary on the Book of Mormon compiled by K. Douglas Bassett, p.92). 2 Nephi 31:4-7 If the Lamb of God, he being holy, should have need to be baptized by water, to fulfil all righteousness, how much more need have we, being unholy, to be baptized, yea, even by water! We know that by living the law of the gospel alone no man can be justified. How much more ennobling and soul-satisfying is the true doctrine of the fall and the true notion of Adam, the assurance that Adam "fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." The war that began in heaven is not yet over. Adam transgressed, and by this transgression he brought two types of death into the world: physical death (all men must eventually die) and spiritual death (all men are temporarily separated from God during mortality). verse 27 In order to understand this verse, it is important to distinguish between two separate concepts, agency and freedom. The atonement of the Savior has a dual character. (Psalm 19:1-3) (Reynolds and Sjodahl, Commentary on the Book of Mormon, vol. The reader should also be reminded that there is much poetry in the Book of Mormon but it is printed in prose form. In this context, it refers to the fact that all of God's children will be resurrected and thereby overcome physical death. We did nothing to earn it. God would have no purpose. Each will be meted out "happiness (reward)" or "punishment" according to his merit. This creation can only be the product of a Divine Idea... 'There must be a Maker; there can be no other way' ("Creation" 21)" (Book of Mormon Symposium Series, edited by PR Cheesman,  MS Nyman, and CD Tate, Jr., 1988, p. 348), Ronald Reagan has been quoted as saying, "sometimes when I'm faced with an atheist, I am tempted to invite him to the greatest gourmet dinner that one could ever serve. When the individual's penalty for sin is removed, he or she is said to be "justified.". "all things must needs be a compound in one" The statement, "all things must needs be a compound in one" is simply a re-statement of the idea that there must be opposition. O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. . 2 Nephi 25. Since all of us sin (1 Jn 1:8), we become cursed under a broken law. The optimal form of redemption is, of course, to be exalted in the celestial heaven. 2 Nephi 13. Here we learn that Satan's very objective is to bring about "the misery of all mankind." verses 28-29 "choose eternal life . The Fall of Adam (and Eve) constituted the mortal creation and brought about the required changes in their bodies, including the circulation of blood and other modifications as well. 2 Nephi 29. 2. ¶ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility. These three principles - the Creation, the Fall, and the Atonement - are inseparable and have properly been called the three pillars of eternity. It is notable that the very word intelligence implies the characteristic of agency. 30 I have spoken these few words unto you all, my sons, in the last days of my probation; and I have chosen the good part, according to the words of the prophet. Intelligences have also always existed. This phrase simply implies that no man can be "justified" or judged worthy of exaltation through his living of the law alone, since no man can live the law perfectly without sin. They saw their loftiest responsibility as multiplying and replenishing the earth. This was according to will of God, And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years (Gen 6:3). An individual qualified to enter any of the three degrees of glory is said to be "saved.". Knowing first hand of the existence and preachings of the Father and the Son, he not only gave in to his "natural self," but he began to contend openly against the teachings of the Father and the Son. As the Lord deals with us in this dispensation, so he has dealt with all people in all dispensations of time since the human family inhabited the earth. They are capable of exercising their agency or acting for themselves. 2 Nephi 22. What would life be like? The freedoms we possess here in mortality depend partly on our obedience to gospel law, but not entirely. Why does this verse say that his "sacrifice" applies only to those who qualify? I can assure you, however, that with repeated study, all of the concepts in this chapter are compatible with one another. 2 Nephi 32:8-9 And now, my beloved brethren, if ye would hearken unto the Spirit which teacheth a man to pray ye would know that ye must pray; for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray. However, the mercy of God has allowed an intercessor. "man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other" Also we are instructed that in order for man to exercise fully his agency, both good and evil choices must be associated with some enticement. For a more detailed discussion of adversity, see Ye Shall Know of the Doctrine, volume 3, chapter 1, Adversity and Suffering. In giving his son Jacob a father's blessing, Lehi delivers a doctrinal discourse on the fall of man, the atonement, and the agency of man. We are not to assume from Peter's illustrative mention of the disobedient antediluvians that they alone were included in the blessed opportunities offered through Christ's ministry in the spirit realm; on the contrary, we conclude in reason and consistency that all whose wickedness in the flesh had brought their spirits into the prison house were sharers in the possibilities of expiation, repentance, and release (Jesus the Christ, 672-73). Further, it would seem that in that dispensation the Lord was particularly inclined to send to the earth angels to preach his gospel (Moses 5:58; Moses 7:27). 2 Nephi 3. Thus I will become a smooth and polished shaft in the quiver of the Almighty, who will give me dominion over all and every one of them, when their refuge of lies shall fail, and their hiding place shall be destroyed, while these smooth-polished stones with which I come in contact become marred." There is a parallel to this situation in Genesis 48:5; Genesis 48:16 where Jacob adopted Joseph's sons Manasseh and Ephraim in place of Reuben and Simeon who had sinned (see Genesis 34:30; Genesis 35:22; Genesis 49:3-5). We also know that man cannot redeem himself from this fallen state. The moment we revolt at anything which comes from God, the devil takes power. Thus, through the preaching of Adam, Enoch, Noah, angels from heaven, and even God himself (see Moses 5:58), no one who died before the Flood died in ignorance. That is, all men shall be resurrected, and no one will be kept out of his eternal presence because of Adam's sin. The individual is thereafter unworthy to be exalted or to enter any degree of glory. The phrase "which the Holy One hath given" simply states that in the plan of the Father and the Son, man is made subject to the "ends of the law. In the spirit world, if the demands of justice are not satisfactorily met by the individual's own personal suffering, and if he does not eventually repent and confess Jesus Christ, the individual will remain "filthy still" and go with Satan and his angels. Turning to Brother Rasmussen he said, "Say it again, but not so fast." If they hadn't, we would all still be in the pre-mortal existence while Adam and Eve remained in the Garden renaming the animals. And I have none other object save it be the everlasting welfare of your souls. The first is that all things were not subject to death or change. The purpose of all creation, as we understand it, is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (. God did place man in a situation where his agency is operational-in mortality, man may use his agency to progress spiritually. There would be no purpose in creation. This world did not come into existence by chance, rather it was created by God for the mortal probation of man. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10). (1 Tim. Of this earthly joy, Brigham Young taught: "'Mormonism' has done everything for me that ever has been done for me on the earth; it has made me happy; it has made me wealthy and comfortable; it has filled me with good feelings, with joy and rejoicing. Amen. If even one sin is committed, man cannot qualify for entry back into God's presence or indeed into any kingdom of glory. One of the unconditional blessings of Christ's atoning sacrifice was the complete overcoming of the effects of Adam's transgression. This same phraseology is used elsewhere, several times in the scriptures (Deuteronomy 4:40; Deuteronomy 5:16; Deuteronomy 5:30; Deuteronomy 6:2; Deuteronomy 11:9; Deuteronomy 11:30;18; 32:47; Isaiah 13:22; Isaiah 53:10; Helaman 15:4; Helaman 15:10; 2 Nephi 23:22; Alma 9:18). Would growth be possible if there were no adversity and no need to strive? In order to understand this verse, it is important to distinguish between two separate concepts. The phrase "in the end of man" is perhaps best interpreted as meaning "in the life of man" or "in the lives of men.". 2 Nephi 6. There are, however, two positive or desirable effects. 2 Nephi 11. In both of these are men "cut off," or separated, from something important. Man is automatically the beneficiary of the unconditional blessings of the atonement without any effort on his own part. We are only to deprive ourselves of those worldly pleasures which enslave the human mind, body, and spirit. It was of this day that Lehi said: "And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end" (2 Nephi 2:22). And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? He would have been subject to Satan's buffetings forever. These are the people who repent of their sins. 2 Nephi 8. Mosaic law required the consecration of the choicest and initial part of the harvest to God-the "firstfruits." Yet, the atonement is retroactive. It would seem that the phrase "ends of the atonement" refers to the ultimate fulfilling purpose of the atonement-exaltation in the eternal presence of the Father. 1 Nephi 2:1 For behold, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto my father, yea, even in a dream, and saith unto him: Blessed art thou Lehi because of the things which thou hast done. By this unconditional atonement, the effects of the fall of Adam are completely overcome. This meaning of spiritual is important and pertains in other verses of scripture. Satan would be allowed to come to earth to entice men to do evil. All that has changed with the fulfillment of the law of Moses is a change in the nature of the sacrifice. It is suggested that the reader study the chapter, Agency and Freedom found in Ye Shall Know of the Doctrine, volume 1, chapter 13, prior to continuing. It is not found in the scriptures. The greatest conflict that any man or woman will ever have (I care not how numerous their enemies may be) will be the battle that is had with self. It has no Greek or Latin root. Man has agency and can choose for himself, but he cannot escape the consequences of the eternal law. Only in the Garden were living things all created in a "spiritual" or paradisiacal state. 2 Nephi 18. There is a "timelessness" to the Lord's eternal plan for us. Reconciliation, therefore, literally means 'to sit again with. He thus cannot find eternal happiness. In spiritual matters, we earn our freedom by exercising our agency and obeying the commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It seems if there is one concept that is well appreciated it is this one-that the trials and tribulations of mortality serve God's purpose because they become the refining fire which purifies the soul and gives us experience. These are the unconditional blessings of the Savior's atonement. This verse implies that the concepts of law, sin, righteousness, punishment, and God are so intimately interdependent upon one another that one cannot exist without the others. 2 Nephi 7. He suffered the unbelievable agony just a man would suffer. " Rabbi Muffs was profoundly touched and exclaimed, "I've found the text I've searched for all my life ... in the Book of Mormon." It was probably this lost scripture to which Jesus referred to in Luke 10:42 when he spoke of choosing "that good part. Elder Bruce R. McConkie suggested that when Adam and Eve partook of this fruit they "complied with whatever the law was that brought mortality into being" (A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, 86). Following this creative era, once the earth was ready, all living things may have been removed from the earth. (“Struggle for the Soul,” New Era, Mar. Alma 17:3. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other. 15 And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter. Summary of 2 Nephi. Simply stated, they are that a man guilty of sin is unworthy to return to his celestial home, or in fact, unworthy to return to any degree of glory. Proof of this is found in the long history of humanity" (The Constitution: A Heavenly Banner, pp. The second part of his statement, "Ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil," is, of course, true. Anyone who has tasted of the sufferings of the wicked and then learns of the merciful Plan of Salvation, understands how important it is to preach the gospel. Freedom is not a free gift, however, but must be earned. With this gift comes the motivation to obey the commandments, to submit to his will. In most cases "corruption" refers to the mortal body, which is subject to death and dissolution, and "incorruption" refers to the immortal body, which is resurrected, spiritual, and will abide forever (2 Nephi 9:7; Mosiah 16:10; Alma 5:15; Alma 11:45; Alma 12:18; Alma 40:2; Alma 41:4; Mormon 6:21). (Conference Report, Oct. 1969, pp. b. This same meaning was intended by Paul. The Lord warns Nephi to depart into the wilderness. Bytheway goes chapter by chapter, helping the reader understand cultural references, symbolic language, and the overall message of the selections of Isaiah’s writings that are referenced in 2 Nephi. The number of alternatives that any given man might have available to him might vary considerably. Lehi may have considered Jacob to be something of a replacement for his eldest son, Laman, with his younger son Joseph being a replacement for the second son, Lemuel. Actually two other variations of the term "firstfruits" are used also in the Book of Mormon, first-fruits, and first fruits. "...I have seen the remorse and despair in the lives of men who, in the hour of trial, have cursed God and died spiritually. He knew that in their original created state, he and Eve could not have posterity (Moses 5:10). "Thou are my first-born in the days of my tribulation in the wilderness", This statement may have a deeper meaning than simply stating that Jacob was the first child to be born to Sariah while in the wilderness. He received two great revelations about the process of affliction: If thou art called to pass through tribulation...if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. He lived six hundred years before the Savior came to earth to work out the infinite atonement. God also cannot remove a man's agency. Thus, the wicked voluntarily give up their freedom so that Satan can drag them down to his miserable level. And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him. Without sin there could be no wickedness or righteousness. See Ye Shall Know of the Doctrine, volume 1, chapter 16, The Role of Satan. Things to act and things to be acted upon. In other words, the days of the children of men were "prolonged" compared to what or to whom? The word intelligence comes from the latin intellegere which is a variant form of inter meaning between and legere meaning to choose. People only remain free as long as they exercise this agency wisely. In this case part of his underlying "natural" inclinations were profound fears that he would fail to return to his former place of prominence. The Lord has explained in D&C 29:34: "Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal; neither any man, nor the children of men; neither Adam, your father, whom I created." Without an opportunity to excel in obedience, he cannot be exalted. How important is it that those doomed to suffer are warned of what is to come? With no ethical issues, could we learn to use our agency in an edifying manner? The second is that they could distinguish good from evil. 2 Nephi 15. The natural self of man is all the enticement a man needs to do evil. The simplest answer is that Joseph did not decide to use the word atonement. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. verse 30 "I have chosen the good part, according to the words of the prophet." This same phraseology is used elsewhere, several times in the scriptures (, "he showed unto men that they were lost because of the transgression of their parents". In the next chapter of Isaiah, the prophet will compare the house of Israel to a 'vineyard in a very fruitful hill' (2 Ne 15:1). 2 Nephi 33. And miraculously, leaks in the circulation could be sealed off by components activated from the very blood being lost. What a simple concept? So these two mighty forces are operating upon us through these two channels. Because every man has sinned, he is not qualified to return to God's presence or, in fact, he does not qualify to be assigned to any degree of glory. This is where our doctrine differs. In the opening session, as he gave his name and university, Rabbi Muffs boomed, "You're the Mormon! He is not simply an accident of nature subject only to natural laws. "And by the law no flesh is justified" We know that by living the law of the gospel alone no man can be justified. The phrase "which the Holy One hath given" simply states that in the plan of the Father and the Son, man is made subject to the "ends of the law.". The Second Book of Nephi. Jacob's righteousness was such that he was privileged to see the Lord and His pre-mortal glory as did Nephi and many other prophets. Adam's and Eve's actions in Eden were intelligently thought through, selfless, and nobly executed. What greater joy could one possibly experience than to hear the Savior say, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord (Matt 25:21)? Since all have sinned, all are subject to the "ends of the law" and will receive the "punishment which is affixed" to that law. Indeed, would we in fact possess any meaningful agency? There is probably a scripture written by a major prophet which refers to "choosing the good part" and which is lost to us today. One of the poignant phrases in these verses is in 1 Nephi 17:1 where Nephi reports, "And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness." See, "man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other". Christ's suffering will answer or satisfy the law of justice for those sincere individuals. "Recollect, brethren and sisters, every one of you, that when evil is suggested to you, when it arises in your hearts, it is through the temporal organization. And when we have finished eating that magnificent dinner to ask him if he believes there's a cook." The first is the period of preparatory creation when the earth was prepared for the advent of modern life forms including man on the earth. Similarly, the great space scientist Wernher von Braun has written. It was only in this way that they could become as God, knowing good and evil. These are incapable of acting for themselves and are instead acted upon. "nor corruption nor incorruption" The words corruption and incorruption are used in the Book of Mormon to contrast the nature of mortal things (corruption) and spiritual things (incorruption). "they would have had no children" In the paradisiacal or spiritual state no living thing could enjoy the privilege of procreation. 2 Nephi 13. It might also be compromised by the actions of others including government. He speaks about opposites—that without evil there is no good; without sin there is no righteousness; that without these things there is no God; and if there is no God there is no earth. About 588–570 B.C. The identity of "the prophet" is unknown but probably is Isaiah or perhaps Moses. Scripture Mastery. This joy, however, can only be obtained by an individual who has the opportunity and the ability to choose between good and evil, and he selects the good. This ingredient is "free" and given to man without his having earned it. The "law" here is apparently the law of the gospel of Jesus Christ-all the commandments of the Lord. 2:5.). Even if you have already read these articles, yet their vital concepts are not fresh on your mind, please re-read them before you study the rest of this chapter. On the other hand, we know that ultimately Adam and Eve's choice to leave the garden was a deliberate one.
