This community is my home, thus by extension, so is HCMC. In my current roles, I use my combined training both in my practice and as an educator working to create the best possible educational environment for our residents. The program also emphasizes diversity of training. We have the busiest Emergency Department in the region, as well as a brand new ambulatory building for all outpatient surgeries and procedures. Hennepin’s internal medicine residency was part of an ACGME collaborative (the Educational Innovations Project) for a decade, which led to the permanent restructuring of resident clinics. Hennepin is both a nationally-renowned Level I Trauma Center serving patients from all corners of Minnesota, and a safety net hospital for Hennepin County. Research projects by residents are well supported. Clinical responsibilities include 5-6 months as EM "pit bosses," and a fifth month in the MICU on night float. EM/IM residents maintain their continuity clinic together on Thursday afternoons with a dedicated preceptor promoting an education that is tailored to the unique skills and abilities of EM/IM residents. Hennepin’s Interdisciplinary Simulation and Education Center is used for case-based teaching about codes, cardiovascular, and neurologic emergencies. Residents may apply to enter this pathway at the beginning of their PGY-4 year, after completing 3 years of an EM/IM residency program. The PGY-2 year offers additional responsibility in both programs. They build clinical skills and meet milestones as part of a mission-driven, caring community. In this 6-year program, residents complete the requirements for training in both EM and IM, as well as a residency in critical care medicine. ”.
